Musings on Meditation, Yoga Mindset, and Homeschooling During COVID-19

Finding Calm in Chaos: Homeschooling, Meditation, and a Pandemic

Our COVID-19 homeschooling adventure starts with a fist bump or hug, inspired by my son's classroom greeting. Then, we take five deep breaths and share five minutes of meditation to center us all for the day ahead.

Sometimes, the kids surprise me with their focus. Other days, it's a battle to even get them settled. But I feel consistency is key. It creates a habit and models mindfulness, especially on days they struggle.

Meditation is a lifesaver during a global pandemic. It helps me navigate anxieties around the economy, loved ones far away, and the ever-changing situation we are living in. Letting go of things outside my control is a powerful lesson.

We had to cancel our dream family trip to the Galapagos Islands, a small loss in the grand scheme of things. But the fear of losing loved ones to the virus was very real.

We rescheduled for November, but who knows what the future holds? Living in the present moment and staying open to possibilities is all we can do.

The pandemic feels like science fiction, but for some, it's a grim reality. Misinformation is rampant, and it can be frustrating. Educating myself through reliable sources is crucial.

Mostly, this time has been about introspection. Feeling stuck at home while wanting to help others has been challenging. Small acts of kindness like leaving gifts for delivery people or carefully managing our own shopping are ways I contribute.

Focusing on the present moment, taking things one step at a time – that's the essence of yoga. This pandemic is a powerful teacher in that regard.

I planted a winter garden for the first time, and it has been a rewarding experience. Sharing fresh produce with friends and receiving citrus in return reinforces the importance of simple connections and community.

These are some things I often overlooked before in the hustle and bustle of life. Now, with each breath and each moment with my children, I find gratitude for the unexpected lessons learned during this extraordinary time.
