Altadena California residents oppose a predatory Dollar Tree leasing the Baja Ranch location and ruining their neighborhood.

Altadena Says NO to Predatory Dollar Tree at the Baja Ranch location on Fair Oaks Avenue

NO Predatory Dollar Tree
on Fair Oaks

Dollar Tree is in the late stages of negotiating a 10-year lease for the Baja Market Lot.

(3/30/24 update below.)

We, and our neighbors, do not support this business going in. Stores like these have a historically negative economic effect in their communities. (See links below for more.)

Altadena has two good dollar stores within blocks of this location; one on Lake next to Aldi, and the other a few blocks south on Fair Oaks. These smaller businesses, and other small businesses in town, deserve continued support.

It is very likely they are going to sign this contract before the end of the year. We have reached out to our Town Council representatives and Board of Supervisors.

Please sign the petition to let the Town Council and Supervisor know we are not in support of this type of development.

There is space in the form to indicate the type of businesses you’d love to see in that location. Central and West Altadena deserve thoughtful development. (There is a T-Mobile also set to lease, and no one has objected to that.)

If you have any questions, let us know. Please forward this to your neighbors and local friends you believe may be interested.

Warmly,
Gwen, Seriina, and June

As of 3/30/24:

  • We reached out to the Trust that owns the property. We did not hear back.

  • It appears the transaction has stalled. We are monitoring.

  • Dollar Trees are closing locations around the U.S. This may impact the lease. See here.

Dollar Tree has received almost $14 million dollars in OSHA fines

Many employees of dollar-type stores have taken to social media to explain how bad conditions are for them. Stores are understaffed. Employees are low-paid, overworked, and treated poorly.

John Oliver recently produced a segment about dollar stores on his show Last Week Tonight. His assertions are backed up by our research cited above, plus more.

Altadena is diverse, quirky and charming.

Let’s keep it that way.

Growth and change are inevitable.

Yet as part of unincorporated LA County, Altadena does not have oversight and planning. Community members work with Altadena Town Council and Board of Supervisors to find better solutions.

Please sign the petition and say NO to Dollar Tree in the Baja Ranch location on Fair Oaks Avenue in Central/West Altadena. There is space to include your suggestions for the location.
